Join the volunteer guides at Miss Porter’s House Museum (National Trust) for a special display pf photos, greeting cards and memorabilia collected by the Porter family from the time when Ella and Hazel’s grandparents emigrated from the United Kingdom until the late 20th century. Follow the long, difficult voyage made by ship when the grandparents took on the challenge of relocating to Australia. Learn of the families early days as farmers in the Singleton area and on Ash Island through to their days as carriers, grocers and working women. The display depicts their interactions with the growing Newcastle West community, the position they held within that society and membership of community groups. This is the story of a family who contributed much and were influential in the growth of Newcastle’s West End.
The house is open from 1 pm until 4 pm.
Admission : Adults $10, Concession $8, Family $25 and children under 5 free.
