The winner of the inaugural Lake Art Prize 2020 was announced on 11 December 2020 as Chelle Destefano, for her work Navigating to Safe Space 2020. Artists from across Australia were invited to submit works for the prize responding to the theme ‘Where there is Water’, and Destefano’s work was selected as the winner from over 600 submissions.
Navigating to Safe Space is a combination of textile and video performance and represents the artist’s journey to find her safe space in her community.
“The message in the work relating to seas of communities was a powerful one when I related an experience I had when looking for and finding the deaf community,” Destefano said.
“It was like seas of water trying to find that, and then coming to shore, so to speak, to find them.”
In addition to acquiring Destefano’s work, MAC also purchased four other exceptional works from the exhibition for its permanent collection. They included The Last Arborist by Lotti Consalvo, Water is Life! by Ben Adams, Baaka Nhuungku by Lotte Hilder and Jasmine Cruciun, and Wilugaju Wilara by Dale Collier and Nicole Monks.
The Lake Art Prize 2020 Finalist exhibition is on display at MAC until 7 February. Visitors are welcome to place a vote in the Lake Art Prize 2020 People’s Choice Award.

AUSTRALIA DAY AT MISS PORTER’S HOUSE
Celebrate Australia Day 2021 by visiting a heritage property. Miss Porter’s House Museum will open on Tuesday January 26th 1pm – 4pm.
See the home created by the Australian born children of nineteenth century migrants. Newcastle boy Herbert Porter and his wife Florence raised a family in Newcastle West. Their freestanding Edwardian home is now a National Trust museum containing a century of household memorabilia including many which reflect their interest in the local area and all things Australian.
Florence and her daughters Ella and Hazel were excellent craftswomen. Their crochet, embroidery and stencil work included many native motifs while images of kookaburras, kangaroos and wattle adorn commercial brooches, matchboxes, and tea towels. They also collected news clippings, photographs and postcards illustrating local events.
Spend the day reliving early twentieth century Australia.

Leprosy still exist. Did you know that every 2 minutes, a person is diagnosed with leprosy? For people affected by leprosy, the battle isn’t only against the disease, it is also against the despair of being rejected by their community. Help to stop the pain of rejection for people affected by leprosy this World Leprosy Day (or hold your own). Your support will help with early diagnosis and treatment of leprosy and help stop it from leading to nerve damage, ulcers and permanent disability. And provide community education to end the stigma.
