Yacht Destroyed In Fire At Nelson Bay

A salvage operation is expected to be carried out following a large boat fire at Nelson Bay overnight.

About 9.30pm on Monday evening, a blaze broke out on a 70-foot yacht berthed at the marina.

A dozen fire crews were rushed to the scene and fought through the night to stop the flames from spreading to the marina itself or any neighbouring vessels.

Hazmat crews also responded to prevent diesel spreading in the water.

The burnt out yacht was unoccupied at the time.

Investigations into the cause are now underway, but it is understood the fire is believed to have started in the engine compartment.
