Volunteer Firefighter Charged over Lake Macquarie Fires

A teenage volunteer firefighter has been charged after police allegedly spotted him trying to start a fire in bushland in Wakefield last Friday.

Officers arrested the 17-year-old boy during a vehicle stop on Rose Avenue, Glendale last night after Strike Force Kurla was formed to investigate a spate of suspicious fires in the Lake Macquarie area.

He’s also been charged over two suspicious fires in Teralba, one on Weir Road and in November and the other on Current Avenue in December.

The teenager has been granted strict conditional bail and will front Children’s Court on February 4th.

Investigations are continuing.

Police are reminding the public that charges for starting a bushfire can carry sentences of up to 25 years imprisonment.
