Affordable Housing Project Set For Wickham

A new affordable housing project at Wickham is now in the works.

Newcastle City Council is teaming up with Compass Housing to get the development up and running, with both parties contributing $3 million each.

The 17 unit block will be built on Station Street, with eight of those to be reserved for key workers while the rest will be rented out to social housing tenants.

A cafe will also be built on the ground-floor to train people for future employment.

Lord Mayor Nuatali Nelmes says the project is all about making Newcastle more inclusive.

“Cities need to…have a mix of housing stock that caters for everybody’s needs and this is a great development because it’s not just affordable housing, it’s social housing as well.”

“We are going to make sure that we keep providing homes for people that most need it.”
