The young Miss Porters were born in the early years of the 20th century in a rapidly changing world. Photographs within the collection at the house show changes in clothing, hairstyles and attitudes to social behaviour. In the same way the toys and books owned by the Hazel and Ella Porter also show examples of the changes occurring in those early twentieth century decades.
The house contains an amazing collection of toys, dolls and books from those early years. Beautiful tin-plate mechanical toys, dating back to before 1914 when the import of German goods declined. Dolls made from cloth, celluloid and pre plastics as well as the amazing new soft plastics.
Miss Porter’s House Museum is the only National Trust property in Newcastle. The free-standing Edwardian terrace was built in 1904 by Herbert Porter for his young family. Following his death at a young age Florence and their two daughter’s Hazel and Ella continued to live in the home up until 1997.
