Maitland Gaol’s foundation stoen was laid at 10.00am on the 16 February 1844 within the walls near the north-west corner of the enclosure. The ceremony was poorly attended due to inclement weather. A few men assisted Edward Denny Day in laying the stone. Several coins from the reigns of George III, George IV, William IV and Queen Victoria, together with an inscription were placed in a bottle, sealed, and deposited within the stone.
Time capsules are created to commemorate an event or to capture a moment for the future. To mark 180 years since the foundation stone was laid, Maitland Gaol are running a special children’s activity where you can create your own 10 year time capsule. Enjoy a special mini-tour of Maitland Gaol, followed by a the time-capsule activity.
Maitland Gaol will supply a recycled jar/cardboard box and some activity sheets for you to place in your time capsule, however we recommend children make their time capsule special by bringing along some or all of the following items:
A school certificate and/or ribbon
A letter from their parents
Photos from the past year/years
Once your time capsule is complete, we will secure your capsule and place a sticker on top, advising you can open on 16 February 2034.
