In search of Janette Grace Grossmann
The 2023 Grossmann Lecture, Saturday 22nd July, 2-4pm, on the lower level of Brough House, 73 Church St, Maitland, focuses on the extraordinary woman who was the first principal of Maitland Girls’ High School when it relocated to what is now Grossmann House in 1892. The 45-minute presentation will be delivered by Dr Josephine May, and explores the family background, life, and career of Janette Grace Grossmann, pioneering girl’s secondary principal in the NSW state teaching service.
Miss Grossmann took over the administration and almost all of the teaching in 1890 at the fledgling Maitland Girls High School in Church Street Maitland and raised its profile to become an elite secondary girl’s school in NSW.
